Maria & The Mirrors
I don't think there's been a thread about them yet.
http://mariamirrors.tumblr.com/
Pretty great band, yes? Sexy noise music that reminds me of HEALTH a tiny bit, only more gritty and sleazy, and perhaps less tuneful (if you can imagine that).
Their new single's out Monday 30th April and the launch party is this Friday at Power Lunches- and William Bennett's Whitehouse are playing too!

Shitmat
I feel obliged to point out that they're not 'Noise' :P
their music some really good noise tho and is very noisy.
Last time I saw them there it was pretty insane.
I'll be there :)
*their music includes some
yeah, I probably meant noisy
although I'd be curious to know why you wouldn't call them noise?
they have songs
drums, lyrics etc. Music, that kind of thing :)
I'm not even THAT draconian about what I consider 'Noise' as a genre, I accept that it's just a helpful label (but in my opinion it is less helpful when it extends to 'any shoreditch band with synths and more than one drumkit.) You should see some of the debates on the subject on noise forums. :-S If you want to get philosophical/technical about about it then even Merzbow etc would have to be discounted as 'music. :)
I figured
I was just interested as to why they wouldn't be considered noise. I suppose I would only call them noise because my knowledge of genres is fairly limited (as in I know many terms but am not 100% sure what they all ecompass)...but hey, great band eh?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fs_GuiVKiJY
I endorse this band and daresay anyone attending will have a good time
but I don't think it's cricket to tell people that Whitehouse are playing this show
(it's Bennett as Cut Hands right?)
Woops
I'm tired, not focusing etc...yes it is Cut Hands, who I'm very much looking forward to!
that is a terrible name
but then if that t-shirt is real, I'M OOOOT (think I only need one Health in my life)
you hate the name
yet you like Marina & The Diamonds? They're practically the same name!
HEALTH comparison is probably a bit lazy...don't listen to me, listen to them!
nah, I don't like Marina, where did you get that idea from? I'm pretty much against & The ___ band names.
what's in a name?
a first impression?
a communication? a statement of intent?
but not always a true reflection of their music
a name is just a name. To avoid listening to a band based on their name is quite ridiculous.
this should be on the "bands with stupid names" thread
someone & the somethings. urp.
i booked them last year
they were fantastic, i really like them.
The biggest shower of Shoreditch shit London has produced in the last 10 years.
Absolutely hate this band. So much so that i'm going to miss Cut Hands just to ensure they receive none of my money. Shame really, because I really want to see Cut Hands!
why don't you leave after Cut Hands
and assume that William Bennett got your fiver?
I assume Cut Hands will be headlining?
I see The Lowest Form are playing too. Really like them. Might have to grin and bear it and just take up smoking during M&TM's set.
I don't know
I thought M&TM would be given it's their single launch.
Cut Hands headlining as far as I know
which is quite far, but I'm not certain.
Everyone spends most of their time upstairs or outside at Power Lunches anyway
they need to invest in some air-con
although I'm sure they're not really in a position to do so...
Cut Hands
Are headlining with M&TM on before. DJ's upstairs & downstairs.
Would definitely be great for us to get in some better ventilation but no money for it really.
I figured as much
those units are ridiculously expensive. Great venue all the same, played there a few months ago with Woolf and Pheremoans and had great fun!
From the facebook event page:
"Maria & the Mirrors are a London-based FFM trio who subvert the frantic overload of power electronics, dancehall and noise by injecting it with a luridly wasted shot of exotic glamour."
I hope William Bennett kicks them all in the cunt for daring to even utter the words 'power electronics'.
I'm mainly going to this show to see the expression on his face re:every single aspect of the venue/lineup/audience
:D
and also if his act is as racist as i've been lead to believe :)
It's just instrumental stuff though isn't it? Not even any vocal samples.
Unless he just uses a backing video of the Nuremburg Rally or something!
I think he does have backing videos tho good luck to them getting a video projector pointed at anything visible to the audience down there :D
I speak from experience.
there are backing videos
when I saw it (Supersonic) it was sped-up/looped/dicked-about-with footage of what I think were religious rituals of some kind in Africa - lots of foaming at the mouth and suchlike - and (iirc) African kids getting up to no good and beating each other up
daresay there are plenty of earnest bloggers out there who could expound on why this is racist, I just thought it was cool to look at
his backing video reads like an piss-take on an amnesty international commercial, but because it's set to his pseudo tribal bullshit for Birmingham City and other polytechnic grads it's gawk worthy, rather than holy shit turn that off
#whiteprivilege
Erm
Judging by his @audience" with William Bennett at supersonic I think it's more the case of a middle aged man desperately trying to gain the approval of the hip kids so I'd better not pin any hopes of old school Bennett disdain in his face,,
:(
I'll probably have drunk too much guiness export to recognise facial expressions by that point anyway
.
I saw these guys live last year. Probably enjoyable if you're under 21.
I'm 24 and like them
MASSIVE PARADOX
They are good fun.
If they upset CG even better.
whitehouse are back?!
*Whitehouse's William Bennett
Or as commonly billed by doom
-metal promoters-just-discovered-noise-promoters everywhere
Presenting: The Frontman from whitehouse
Cut hands is some of the laziest
Racist bulldhit I've ever seen.
M&m actually have one good member with some awesome equipment, one girl that can play a drum and a little witch who manages to ruin everything by not being able to play anything and blaming the audience/sound man for her general uselessness.
HEALTH is an appropriate comparison because all east London "noise" bands try and be HEALTH
*shit
Health is also a useful comparison
because they have the little Japanese dude who seemingly does fuck all but squirm around
Seriously, the "noise" rock equivalent of Radiohead fronted by Bez
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwJMIqpByoA
:D i just actually had a look at that video and your description was much more apt than I expected!!
I coudn't be bothered to properly listen, I definitely prefer Maria and the Mirrors. :)
Cut Hands is great
I'M ENJOYING THE THREAAAADDD
http://blog.wfmu.org/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/18/bennet1_4.jpg
I always thought Philip Best was the filthier of the two though.
you're forgetting Peter Sotos
Peter Sotos is a gentleman and a scholar.
I will believe no man that says otherwise.
The other 2 did
When he became too embarrassing .
Phil is a phd from Durham don't you know.
*won't believe
Re: the artist tags I'd go to that festival for sure
They're also playing at this thing on May 6th but anyone in London who isn't at Never Say When (Broken Flag festival) that weekend doesn't acutally like Noise
https://www.facebook.com/events/372702002752148/
can someone explain to me the whole racist Whitehouse thing to me please?
What exactly do they do that is racist? i'm curious.
probably not
that's a pity.
The Wire like him now after years of terrible reviews ignoring the music and moaning about
Whitehouse's refusal to explain their 'ambiguous' use of offensive and political material so i guess it's OK now anyway. :-/
My Cock's On Fire (long version)
Here are some reviews by Neil Campbell in which he doesn't like the Cut Hands album and likes the Maria & The Mirrors. I'm with him on this one!
Here is an article about William Bennett's records

Tickets for the show on Friday
Are available from here - http://buytickets.at/power-lunches/3753
I really like the Cut Hands record
does that mean I'm a racist? I haven't heard much of his previous work.
not quite sure about this whole racist thing
I'll get back to you on that one after tonight.
I'm just worried because countzero has said they're racist
and he's usually pretty bang on about this kind of stuff and not given to overreactions.
Should be ok
You don't have to be racist to like power electronics
...but it helps!
How was the gig!
the bits of it i could actually bear to be inside for were nice and loud fun
Went up for air during Cut Hands and never came back. Tried to go to some other place with friends I met in the street but we ended up just going back and watching Bullseye etc on challenge TV till 3am :-S
back to theirs that is
as far as I know Uncle William hadn't swapped the visuals from dubious africa-exoticism with cheesy video FX to just broadcasting Challenge TV
Bear to be inside
Chaaaaarming
;)
^_^; you know i love the place
it was SOOooo packed tho :)
Soundchecks ran ridiculously late
meaning I missed everyone but Peepholes. Really gutted. Still, nice to see some familiar faces and meet Cementimental breifly (hi!)
:(
hi ^_^
oooh looks like I'm playing on the same bill as them at this 'This is DIY' thing, on 8th of June
full infos soon
