The only band ever to really earn an exclamation mark. And then some. 3 incredible albums and one which I enjoy less now I'm not 15, but still amazing all the same.
I just try not to overthink it too much. Belle & Seb are quite strong contenders, as are Art Brut, but for me there's just nothing that beats the rush of a Los Camp! gig. Same as aactv said above, on a good day, Romance Is Boring is my favourite ever album.
What on earth do people see in Clinic? I've had the misfortune of seeing them live three times (every time as the support band over a 10 year period) and they've been awful every single time. I usually like that sort of thing but Clinic were awful, naval-gazing faux-droning shite. Really hate them.
If we're saying Scotland is included in Britain then it's Mogwai by miles. If not then it's probably Electric Wizard.
I reckon they provide beguiling wonderment to their fans for the very reasons that their non-fans fail to latch on to them. Which only serves to make me love them more.
it's just that Clinic sound isn't it. they came up with this weird, dirgey, chamber-pop surf-rock sound that no one else has done before or since, and just kept nailing it again and again over about 7 albums or so. pretty much the British Konono no 1 in that respect
If we pretend that the Trans Love Energies remix disc was the actual album, that's an unbroken run of five top quality albums off the bat since britpop died. And Contino Sessions is without a shadow of a doubt one of the top Brit albums of the 'modern times'.
It has a Clinic-ness, imo, that I'm sure you'll go for. I have it in the same drawer of my mental filing cabinet as David Holmes' Bow Down to the Exit Sign and Primal Scream's XTRMNTR.
Let's Get Killed is the one for me. It was getting back to back plays alongside Shadow's Endtroducing when it came out. Bow Down... is yer other starter.
The Free Association stuff he's done is decent too. Out of Sight OST >> the film {and set him up for a billion other film soundtracks). The debut isn't too shabby. Not up to speed with his very latest releases.
I loved McLusky, but they were nowhere near as consistent as FotL. I thing FotL are the best rock band in the world. If they were American, they might not be massive, but they'd be big enough that Falco would haven't to do poorly paid jobs to make ends meet.
Cold House and Outside Closer are two perfect albums. If it's not them, and depending what you mean by "band", it could be Fingathing or the Herbaliser. I'm also tempted to say the Wave Pictures, although I *still* haven't got round to hearing anything they've done post-Sophie.
But then it turned out to be a genuine thread :D
As for the best British band question, I'd probably go with British Sea Power. I love everything about them, and am always surprised I only started listening to them a year ago, it really feels like they've been with me all my life.
they seem to completely pass people by, I think in part due to the fact that they're not really accessible, striking and pop culture-y in the way that even well respected middlebrow artists such as Sufjan Stevens or Joanna Newsom are. There's no easy way into the world of Tindersticks (and no easy way out, either..)
there are a few bands like that (Lambchop, The Clientele, to name but a few), who exist outside fickle pop culture, beyond the grasp of your average listener.
cinematic. that word is misunderstood and misused, but it certainly applies to Tindersticks. they require complete immersion, you have to give yourself to their equal parts stately & grotty romance.
They may have lost some of their lustre as the years have gone on but they've released three great albums (one classic), put out a slew of immense singles, are terrific fun live, permeated popular culture pretty nicely and gave everything a big shake-up in 2004. In addition to The Strokes and The White Stripes, I'd say Franz were the third element of the Triforce that finally banished nu-metal from the charts. And Alex Kapranos seems like a cool dude too.
I love their second album, and 'Tonight:FF' is obviously derivative but in a good way. They're doing something totally unique- it isn't indiepop, it isn't rock, it isn't art-rock, it isn't new-wave, it's a beautiful mischmasch of them all into a sound that's fucking catchy and has plenty to offer and to say. I think a 'foppy little dance band' is quite a good description of them actually- just sat there on the fringes with their own odd image and danceably awkward tunes. They're great. And I've more hope of them putting out a great new album that I have with most 'new' bands of the past ten years, if any.
I know they aren't going to top any critics lists but they just consistantly churn out great albums every year. Really enjoying the new on, probably not their best but the catchy pop of Spagetti and lyrical genius of Come Home Tessa Buckman would be up their with my favourite Wave Pics songs
The Very Best of Neil Diamond and Carbon Dating off the last couple of albums are easily up with the best things they ever did. Fuzzy Logic is fantastic too. I love Gruff solo too.
Extremely cool band, and one that really progressed over their career.
Dunno if I'd agree with including Massive Attack as they really peaked in the 90s, and this thread is about the '00s (I think?). But if 90s are allowed I'd include Portishead. Surely one of the best British bands of all time?!
Re: Broadcast, I really hope the unreleased/unfinished stuff which James mentioned in an interview gets a release. I would be so happy.
As an aside, I was mighty intoxicated the other week and listened right through 'Investigate Witch Cults...' for the first time. Christ that is one scary album...mind blown.
they appeal to the part of me that holds strong memories of black, wrought iron gates, green deciduous foliage in rainy English summers, dewy dawns and stuff.
and I couldn't get over how wonderfully QUIET the song was. A full band playing, but it felt like a whisper. What album do you recommend listening to first?
00's - the bands above (the best of which started in the 90's - Radiohead, SFA, Tindersticks). Elbow and Broadcast are great, but not on the same scale as the bands below...
90's - Blur, Oasis (big, if a bit arse), Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Verve (when they were good), Spirtualized's best output, Massive Attack's best output, Portishead's best output, Aphex Twin...
The Duke Spirit, Archie Bronson Outfit, Crystal head, Jesus Deluxe, Teeth Of The Sea, Fields, Spotlight Kid, Model Morning, 93millionmilesfromthesun, Toba Caldera, Blindness, The Boxer Rebellion, Pure Reason Revolution, The Early Years, Dolittle, Exit Calm, Four Dead In Ohio, Sian Alice Group, Guile, Joe Gideon & The Shark, Koolaid Electric Company, The Tamborines, Tenebrous Liar, Richard Warren, Evi Vine, Spc Eco, Kyte, The Joy Formidable, Domino State, Daniel Land & The Modern Painters, Eat Lights Become Lights, Hold Kiss Kill, Frightened Rabbit, The Longcut, Two Skies
All bands I've seen numerous times live and I think are excellent.
I know we've come full circle and you now lose indie points for liking them, but if we're talking about bands who were at their peak in the 00s, then in terms of consistent quality they're the best by far. Most of the bands mentioned in this thread are painfully dull, or only have one really good album. Girls Aloud have 3 great albums and a better best-of then anyone else.
Mm, it now occurs to me this thread could regress into a Radiohead DiScussion
*shrugs* whatever the fuck
*Best Brit Band that isn't Radiohead!
Dingus Khan
Modern times = since when?
Modern?
I dunno, don't care. Let's say ~10 years.
Not the Beatles, Stones. Not Bowie. Not the Bunnymen. Nor MBV.
Not when you guys when on the top of your game. Post-2000, when Brits sorta fell off the map, musically.
Save bands like Clinic!
And a handful of others. Which you shall name below.
Los Campesinos!
The only band ever to really earn an exclamation mark. And then some. 3 incredible albums and one which I enjoy less now I'm not 15, but still amazing all the same.
Romance Is Boring is quite possibly my favourite album of any genre ever.
hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
better than anything radiohead have done
Both the above posts are incorrect
Really?
I quite like LC!, but I doubt they'd make my top 20 Brit bands of recent.
Honestly
I just try not to overthink it too much. Belle & Seb are quite strong contenders, as are Art Brut, but for me there's just nothing that beats the rush of a Los Camp! gig. Same as aactv said above, on a good day, Romance Is Boring is my favourite ever album.
Well I'll avoid the elephant in the room
and say The Delgados, even if they were only around until 2004/2005. Or maybe Elbow *ducks the rotten fruit*
Elbow's a worthy shout
I like a lot of their stuff. Even if I always feel like I'd rather listen to The National instead.
Clinic will never. ever. ever. ever get as much love as they deserve.
Without meaning to be a dickhead internet contrarian
What on earth do people see in Clinic? I've had the misfortune of seeing them live three times (every time as the support band over a 10 year period) and they've been awful every single time. I usually like that sort of thing but Clinic were awful, naval-gazing faux-droning shite. Really hate them.
If we're saying Scotland is included in Britain then it's Mogwai by miles. If not then it's probably Electric Wizard.

I reckon they provide beguiling wonderment to their fans for the very reasons that their non-fans fail to latch on to them. Which only serves to make me love them more.

I dunno if this is a compliment
but I pretty much agree. :)
Sounds like a compliment to me,
in the vein of Peel's Fall summary: They are always different, they are always the same.
spot on, mate
How could anyone in their right mind hate this?

Death in Vegas
If we pretend that the Trans Love Energies remix disc was the actual album, that's an unbroken run of five top quality albums off the bat since britpop died. And Contino Sessions is without a shadow of a doubt one of the top Brit albums of the 'modern times'.
Not familiar
Will investigate.
Defo start with Contino.
It has a Clinic-ness, imo, that I'm sure you'll go for. I have it in the same drawer of my mental filing cabinet as David Holmes' Bow Down to the Exit Sign and Primal Scream's XTRMNTR.
On your say so
I'm listening to Contino Sessions...
so far so good. Will get everything by 'em. David Holmes, you say? Never heard of.
You're on a roll with me, Wza...so copy that.
The album before Contino Sessions wasn't all that
and I still haven't heard anything after Scorpio Rising, but those two albums are very good indeed.
no way
I love 'Dead Elvis' - Rekkit, Dirt, Rocco, 69 Balcony, Opium Shuffle. I'll take them over that rubbish Bobby Gillespie collab.
Although, Aisha = surely one of the most bizarre UK top 10 singles ever.
David Holmes
Let's Get Killed is the one for me. It was getting back to back plays alongside Shadow's Endtroducing when it came out. Bow Down... is yer other starter.
The Free Association stuff he's done is decent too. Out of Sight OST >> the film {and set him up for a billion other film soundtracks). The debut isn't too shabby. Not up to speed with his very latest releases.
The Holy Pictures is really good
Much more krautrock-y with vocals and stuff.
Sounds good to me.
£2.25 delivered. Bought.
The Holy Pictures is sensational
one of my favourite albums ever!
mclusky/FotL
evidence: the lyrics in capitals fred
Am familiar.
Good shout.
Future of the Left
I loved McLusky, but they were nowhere near as consistent as FotL. I thing FotL are the best rock band in the world. If they were American, they might not be massive, but they'd be big enough that Falco would haven't to do poorly paid jobs to make ends meet.
I think it's a travesty
that Falco has to do shitty jobs to make ends meet.
Oceansize
i miss them.
Is it Hood? I think it might be, y'know.
Cold House and Outside Closer are two perfect albums. If it's not them, and depending what you mean by "band", it could be Fingathing or the Herbaliser. I'm also tempted to say the Wave Pictures, although I *still* haven't got round to hearing anything they've done post-Sophie.
Arctic Monkeys
505
would make my Top 20 modern song list.
Mogwai
by a distance
Just had a look through my lastfm charts
there's not many is there! I think Mogwai are the standout.
God so many
I seriously love British bands.
Basement Jaxx, The Chap, SFA, Mogwai, Arab Strap, Arctic Monkeys, The Delgados, The Fall, Four Tet, Fotl / mclusky, Part Chimp, Girls Aloud...
The Fall as modern times? I know there last album was good but surely it's a bit unfair to include a band whose prime was 30 years ago
Four Tet yes, for some reason I never think of him as British.
the current The Fall is a different band to the one from 1982 though for all wants and purposes
I see what you're saying
But I reckon 3 of my favourite ever Fall records have all come out in the past decade
Actually groaned when I saw the title of this thread.
But then it turned out to be a genuine thread :D
As for the best British band question, I'd probably go with British Sea Power. I love everything about them, and am always surprised I only started listening to them a year ago, it really feels like they've been with me all my life.
The Decline
would make my Top 20 modern LP list.
Boards of Canada
Umm... Probably Life Without Buildings tbh
Or William.
Live at the Annandale
best live record ever?
Arguably, yes.
Tindersticks
actually probably a bit old?
Belle and Sebastian then
very good shout
surprised more people haven't concurred.
it saddens me how few people have heard just a single Tindersticks song
they seem to completely pass people by, I think in part due to the fact that they're not really accessible, striking and pop culture-y in the way that even well respected middlebrow artists such as Sufjan Stevens or Joanna Newsom are. There's no easy way into the world of Tindersticks (and no easy way out, either..)
eloquently put
there are a few bands like that (Lambchop, The Clientele, to name but a few), who exist outside fickle pop culture, beyond the grasp of your average listener.
cinematic. that word is misunderstood and misused, but it certainly applies to Tindersticks. they require complete immersion, you have to give yourself to their equal parts stately & grotty romance.
DOWN I GO
Hot Chip
no?
Yes!
Hot Chip
with Wild Beasts as serious contenders.
That's if we're sticking to the Modern Times = last 10 years maxim.
Good shout on Wild Beasts
Another storming record and a I think they'll have it nailed.
I would vouch for Franz Ferdinand as a candidate
They may have lost some of their lustre as the years have gone on but they've released three great albums (one classic), put out a slew of immense singles, are terrific fun live, permeated popular culture pretty nicely and gave everything a big shake-up in 2004. In addition to The Strokes and The White Stripes, I'd say Franz were the third element of the Triforce that finally banished nu-metal from the charts. And Alex Kapranos seems like a cool dude too.
i agree with 100% of that SCROTUM post
here's hoping for a return to form on album 4.
YES
really underrated pop band imo.
I think they've mostly stayed strong.
And I've more hope of them putting out a great new album that I have with most 'new' bands of the past ten years, if any.
well i...
GET.
someone said los campesinos up thread
I dont think i could outroll that
the go! team
Only if..
their second album didn't exist though.
and the third
basically if they'd stayed as a one man bedroom project instead of a band, they could have been incredible.
They're one of the best live bands about.
No doubt about it.
i saw them support the flaming lips
And they were top drawer shizzle.
i liked them.
I like the 3rd album a lot thanks
The Maccabees
Foals
Wild Beasts
Los Camps!
TTNG
The Twilight Sad
...
I love them all
the maccabees? foals?
lol
The Wave Pictures
I know they aren't going to top any critics lists but they just consistantly churn out great albums every year. Really enjoying the new on, probably not their best but the catchy pop of Spagetti and lyrical genius of Come Home Tessa Buckman would be up their with my favourite Wave Pics songs
Roll Deep i guess
*troll deep
from a critical perspective it's pretty much true though
yeah I guess
it's true in terms of who they gave us, what they spawned and in terms of pretty much creating important new styles. they're shite now though.
what
The Very Best of Neil Diamond and Carbon Dating off the last couple of albums are easily up with the best things they ever did. Fuzzy Logic is fantastic too. I love Gruff solo too.
Ed Sheeran
I came on here to say Broadcast too.
Extremely cool band, and one that really progressed over their career.
Dunno if I'd agree with including Massive Attack as they really peaked in the 90s, and this thread is about the '00s (I think?). But if 90s are allowed I'd include Portishead. Surely one of the best British bands of all time?!
:(
everything Broadcast released was stellar. definitely right up there.
Ah so ye did. Fair play.
Meet Me In St. Louis
I never saw them, but I love Shoes & Socks Of
British Sea Power
Ok the eccentricity can seem a bit forced at times, still consistently interesting though
they are shit live
really boring
^ Massive lies
throwing it out there
anyone else agree that 'Open Season' is their masterpiece?
Yeah, 'Decline of...' is a great record, but 'OS' is just unimprovable for me.
Open Season has aged superbly.
It's a travelling record, that one. In the car, train or bus as the sun goes down between late afternoon and early evening. Yes.
I wish all of time could be LIKE THIS...
a really bland band
so sad that they never lived up to the promise of their first album :(
I read this comment time and time again on here. Just don't
get it. They get better and better, Valhalla Dancehall is fecking superb.
fix
Field Music.
I'm pretty sure it's Field Music.
Gah.
That shouldn't be there.
65daysofstatic
or Life Without Buildings
oh snap
it's definitely The Clientele.
sorely unappreciated over here. I despair at their lack of recognition.
'Lacewings'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnvqG2sBQZc&sns=em
'Voices in the Mall'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9Pmn90Tu1I&sns=em

'(I Can't Seem To) Make You Mine'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGekjZd5LPk&sns=em
'E.M.P.T.Y'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2YFBsuyTZM&sns=em
i've always meant to get into them
do it!
they appeal to the part of me that holds strong memories of black, wrought iron gates, green deciduous foliage in rainy English summers, dewy dawns and stuff.
my friend put a song on a mix he made me
and I couldn't get over how wonderfully QUIET the song was. A full band playing, but it felt like a whisper. What album do you recommend listening to first?
Suburban Light
then 'The Violet Hour', 'Strange Geometry', 'God Save the Clientele' and 'Bonfires on the Heath'.
hah, that's chronological order.
Wild Beasts are my favourite
alongside Radiohead obv but who is to say what's best? Wild Beasts though, man 3 seriously fucking addictive albums.
oops, if this counts scottish and welsh bands too then
SFA and anything Aidan Moffat is in.
Super Furry Animals
Hmmm...this thread just demonstrates how the 00's wasn't a patch on the 90's
00's - the bands above (the best of which started in the 90's - Radiohead, SFA, Tindersticks). Elbow and Broadcast are great, but not on the same scale as the bands below...
90's - Blur, Oasis (big, if a bit arse), Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Verve (when they were good), Spirtualized's best output, Massive Attack's best output, Portishead's best output, Aphex Twin...
It's a good job the yanks are about.
FWIW. My favourite Brit Bands of recent times.
The Duke Spirit, Archie Bronson Outfit, Crystal head, Jesus Deluxe, Teeth Of The Sea, Fields, Spotlight Kid, Model Morning, 93millionmilesfromthesun, Toba Caldera, Blindness, The Boxer Rebellion, Pure Reason Revolution, The Early Years, Dolittle, Exit Calm, Four Dead In Ohio, Sian Alice Group, Guile, Joe Gideon & The Shark, Koolaid Electric Company, The Tamborines, Tenebrous Liar, Richard Warren, Evi Vine, Spc Eco, Kyte, The Joy Formidable, Domino State, Daniel Land & The Modern Painters, Eat Lights Become Lights, Hold Kiss Kill, Frightened Rabbit, The Longcut, Two Skies
All bands I've seen numerous times live and I think are excellent.
Polar Bear &/or Acoustic Ladyland
what's your view on Fulborn Teversham?
they're bloody brilliant
seen them live a few times, would be cool if they did another album or something.
yeah almost everything Seb does is great to be honest
I picked up Basquiat Strings a few weeks ago, actually. Not my kind of thing normally, but really atmospheric and enjoyable.
Lapsus Linguae
Just far too good for this world. RIP. Or reform, you beautiful cunts.
Girls Aloud
I know we've come full circle and you now lose indie points for liking them, but if we're talking about bands who were at their peak in the 00s, then in terms of consistent quality they're the best by far. Most of the bands mentioned in this thread are painfully dull, or only have one really good album. Girls Aloud have 3 great albums and a better best-of then anyone else.
Well, better best-of than anyone else except Sugababes...
Like Can't Get You Out Of My Head
they're woefully overrated.
Woefully overrated?
You like Radiohead, Elbow (and by extrapolation) probably Coldplay. Three of the most overrated, not to mention dull, bands of ~modern times~.
OPINION DISMISSED
You can hate them as much as you want
but Elbow are nothing like (nothing remotely like) Coldplay. Always ridiculous when they're mentioned together.
No, Elbow are nothing like...Grace Jones
Or maybe Atari Teenage Riot. Or Dolly Parton.
In the context of most other music, Elbow and Coldplay are pretty similar.
If people still mention Radiohead...
Can i say Spiritualized?
The Horrors
failing that Factory Floor
Bilge Pump
Biffy
Johnny Foreigner
McLusky
SFA
Mogwai
Arab Strap
I'd go for McLusky, the others have their roots more in the 90s really.
